Chaqui Z shines in Wellington

09 / 03 / 2018
Currently we are week nine of Wellington’s Winter Equestrian Festival. Out of 50 starters, 13 combinations cleared the 1.50m Alan Wade designed track in the first round. Seven produced a second clear effort in the jump-off. The Irish Shane Sweetnam and Chaqui Z (Chacco-Blue x Quinar) led early with a time of 40.49 seconds, but Ward McLain sped past them by a second, crossing the timers in 39.37 seconds. It resulted in a second place for Sweetnam and Chaqui Z.

Chaqui Z is bred by the Dutch Morsink family from Overijssel. The Zangersheide stud stallion and Gerben Morsink have been a team since he was saddle broken. During the World Championships for seven-year-olds in Lanaken Chaqui Z caught the attention of Ronan Clarke, Shane Sweetnam’s agent. Back then Shane Sweetnam was on the look-out for an extraordinary horse, one combining all qualities to become a Grand Prix horse. Robert and Lisa Lourie of Spy Coast farm purchased Chaqui Z and Sweetnam had his horse for the future. On Gothenburg’s European Championships of last year, Sweetnam and Chaqui Z scooped team gold and ended individually in eighth place. They were only four faults away from an individual podium place. Shane Sweetnam describes Chaqui Z as a horse with a phenomenal brain. “He has the will power to perform. It’s his intelligence which gives Chaqui Z that special edge.”
