On French soil, last weekend we were looking forward to a new edition of the four-star show of Longines Deauville Classic. Where the British rider Harry Charles and his Romeo 88 had to settle for 2nd place in the ranking in Dublin, we did get a blue/yellow GP victory in Deauville! The victory during the CSI4* GP on Sunday afternoon went to the Spanish rider Mariano Martinez Bastida with the 14-year-old gelding Belano Vd Wijnhoeve Z, a son of Berlin and Darco who was bred by D. De Cuyper. Martinez Bastida and Belano Vd Wijnhoeve Z were one of the only 6 combinations that remained clear in the basic round and so qualified for the jump-off. The duo managed to repeat that flawless performance and with a finish time of 39.98 seconds they were more than a full second ahead of the competition.

Who was also placed during this CSI4* GP was Bastida's compatriot Santiago Nuñez Riva and this with the 11-year-old mare Chakira Z (Crown Z x Quidam de Rêvel – B: G.B.L. Nijhof). They managed to keep all the poles in the cups in the basic round, but 1 penalty point before time kept them out of the jump-off and ensured that they had to settle for 7th place in the ranking.

On Friday, the French rider Nicolas Deseuzes again delivered a strong performance with the 10-year-old stallion Eldorado Sunheup Z, a son of Eldorado van de Zeshoek TN and Quartz du Chanu who was bred by Carine Groualle Elevage Sunheup and with whom Deseuzes won both the CSI3* GP of Megeve and the CSI4* GP of Courlans in recent weeks. During the 1.50m high speed class they rushed to the finish in 64.47 seconds and this performance earned them a 2nd place in the ranking.

On Saturday there was also a 2nd place for Deseuzes' compatriot Axel van Colen with the 8-year-old gelding Depp des Brimbelles Z (Darco x President – B: Haras des Brimbelles). During the 1.40m class against the clock they managed to ensure a clear round. Moreover, during the 1.40m class on Friday, they had already placed 6th in the ranking.

Also on Saturday there was a 1.45m class on the program in Deauville in which the Canadian rider Chris Sorensen managed to jump into the spotlight with the 9-year-old chestnut stallion Exagon RBC Z (Emerald van 't Ruytershof x Lennon – B: Stud Sarl RBC). In a jump-off for which 13 combinations were able to qualify, they had to deal with a fault and this was also good for a 6th place in the ranking.

Finally, during the opening day on Thursday, we also saw two Zangersheide horses in the top 10 of the ranking during the 1.50m class. There was a 4th place for the Luxembourg rider Victor Bettendorf with the 11-year-old grey gelding Simolo de la Roque Z (Spartacus TN x Casall ASK – B: Alexendrine Hecart) and a 5th place for Mariano Martinez Bastida with the 10-year-old stallion Quark de Preuilly Z (Quaprice du Bois Margot x Cento – F: Soc Fermiere de Preuilly). Both managed to ensure a clear round.
