Grand Prix glory for Crislin van den Bosrand Z in Saugerties

With no fewer than three international shows on the calendar, there was plenty of international show jumping action to enjoy on American soil last weekend. One of these shows was the three-star event in Saugerties, New York, where a Z-class horse took top honours in the CSI3* Grand Prix.
The competitions in Saugerties form part of the popular HITS Hudson Valley Jumping Tour, which sees three weeks of three-star-level competition across New York State. The highlight of the weekend was therefore the CSI3* Grand Prix on Saturday, for which thirty-four pairs from nine different countries entered. The standard throughout this Grand Prix was consistently high, with no fewer than sixteen pairs successfully completing the 1.50m course designed by course designer Ken Krome and his team. After a thrilling jump-off, it was the Irish rider Philip McGuane who claimed the top prize with the 9-year-old mare Crislin van den Bosrand Z, a daughter of Carambole and Nabab de Rêve bred by Luc Huyghe. McGuane and Crislin van den Bosrand Z also managed a flawless performance in the jump-off and, with a finishing time of 35.75 seconds, they were just under three-quarters of a second ahead of their closest rivals.
Philip McGuane: “More pairs went through to the jump-off than I’d expected. I was one of the last to start in the jump-off, so I just tried to maintain a good rhythm, ride the turns neatly and trust her over the jumps. She has a big canter, which means I can steer her well towards the fences and take fewer canter strides than most others. We took Crislin over from Brian Moggre when she was seven, and both Nayel Nassar and I have competed her in the sport over the past year. She’s a wonderful horse for both of us. She’s very intelligent and careful, and she knows exactly where the jumps are. She’s a valuable addition to our stable.”
As well as the victory by McGuane and Crislin van den Bosrand Z,third place in this Grand Prix was also taken by a blue-and-yellow combination. That honour went to the American rider Megan McDermott and the equally 9-year-old gelding Da Vinci DV Z, a son of our black stallion Dominator 2000 Z and Turbo van ’t Gestelhof Z, who was bred by Pieter Devos’s family. McDermott and Da Vinci DV Z also produced a clear-round jump-off, clocking a time of 37.73 seconds.
Also in the jump-off, we saw McDermott’s compatriot Molly Ashe Cawley and the 10-year-old mare E Liberty Of Dalwhinnie Z, a daughter of Eldorado van de Zeshoek and Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve, bred by J.F.M. Oortveld in the Netherlands. Ashe Cawley and E Liberty Of Dalwhinnie Z, who had already secured4th place on Thursday in the 1.50m class, clocked the4th-fastest time of 38.40 seconds, but a small fault along the way ultimately pushed them down to10th place in the rankings.
Ninth place in this Grand Prix was taken by the American rider Mimi Gochman and the 10-year-old gelding Lumiere BH, a son of Akarad Hero Z. They too incurred four penalty points in the jump-off, completing the course in a time of 37.84 seconds.
Finally, Brian Moggre also enjoyed a successful competition weekend with the 8-year-old chestnut gelding Johann FS Z, a home-bred horse by Felix Schneider from Germany that combines the bloodlines of John Doe 5 with those of Diamant de Semilly. Moggre and Johann FS Z got off to a flying start on Wednesday with a resounding victory in the 1.45m class, before adding a finesecond place to their honours list on Friday in a second 1.45m class.
